The IMP and National Mentoring Partnership offer many resources and opportunities to celebrate National Mentoring Month. Don't miss this opportunity to expand the reach of quality mentoring programs and to recruit volunteers as mentors.
  • If you missed the November Collaborative Webinar, view the recording or the presentation slides for ideas  for celebrating the month. No need to reinvent the wheel!   National Mentoring Month: Communicating as a Movement
    • Panelists:
      • Susie Merrick, SB Mentoring Program
      • Benji Thurber, Mobius, Vermont’s Mentoring Partnership
      • Abbie Evans, MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership
      • Diane Quest, MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership

  • The National mentoring Month Toolkit  is an excellent resource for messaging resources. It includes social media messages, sample PSAs, media and public official outreach ideas, and theme and messaging. The professional communications staff at MENTOR has made it convenient for us to have a unified voice using common language in promoting mentoring. Please utilize these resources.
  • National Mentoring Month Materials ordered from the IMP were mailed this week. Everyone who requested materials received most items.  However, we were limited in the amount of materials available and were not able to completely fill some orders. Thank you for using these bookmarks, thank you notes and posters to spread the good word about mentoring in your community.
  • The governor's certificates for mentor recognition will be sent out in late December or early January.

Mentoring Day on the Hill will be held in conjunction with Volunteer Iowa Day at the Capitol. This joint effort will strengthen our voice through our affiliation with Volunteer Iowa.

In an outreach effort to encourage schools to utilize mentoring as a strategy to address social/emotional and academic needs of youth, IMP presented at the Iowa School Counselors Association Conference in early November.  School-based mentoring program directors Chris Wilson, JUMP, Johnston; Jayne Wilhelm, Sac County Mentoring, Sac City; Angie Woodford, TeamMates of Storm Lake; and Karen Ligas, Everybody Wins! Iowa joined IMP Director Mary Sheka to share information on their mentoring programs and answer questions from counselors.

A number of counselors indicated that they had mentoring programs that are not IMP certified. As you know, certification ensures a level of quality programming in our state and strengthens the integrity of all mentoring programs. Please help the IMP in a key priority to support new and existing program.  If you are aware of any mentoring programs that are not part of the IMP please educate them on the value and importance of certification and direct them to our website for certification information. Or email the program information to and IMP would be happy to share the benefits of certification.

The next IMP quarterly report will be sent on January 5, 2015 for data covering October, November, December 2014.  Reports will be due by close of business on Friday, January 30, 2015. Please mark a reminder on your calendar.  Check your January update for the report announcement and link to complete the report.

As many of you know, the Million Women Mentors Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Challenge is happening right now! This Coaches’ Challenge encourages people to sign up to become mentors to young women who are interested in pursuing STEM careers. Head coaches Jenny Baranczyk from Drake University, Lisa Bluder from the University of Iowa, Bill Fennelly from Iowa State University, and Tanya Warren from the University of Northern Iowa are backing this event. As with the football Coaches’ Challenge, local high school and college girls basketball coaches have been invited to sign on in support of the Coaches’ Challenge. Mentoring programs can utilize this endorsement from the women's basketball coaches to recruit mentors. This is a great opportunity for a National Mentoring Month event in your community this January.
If you need ideas for how to better leverage the Coaches’ Challenge campaign for basketball, do not hesitate to contact IMP AmeriCorps Vista Rachel Vastine at to learn more and/or brainstorm opportunities for your program.

Tip-off event at Drake University's home opener with Iowa Mentoring Partnership and Community Youth Concepts and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa representing the Des Moines Mentoring Partnership.

This event is the only national forum that brings together practitioners, researchers, corporate partners, government and civic leaders, national youth-serving organizations and the network of affiliate Mentoring Partnerships to explore and advance mentoring’s positive impact on individuals and communities. The 2015 event has been extended to incorporate a mentoring advocacy day called Capitol Hill Day. The inaugural 2015 Capitol Hill Day is open to all Summit attendees and is included with Summit registration. This is an invaluable opportunity to join committed colleagues who will meet with members of Congress and their staff to relay the far-reaching impact quality youth mentoring has on their communities.

Please email if you are attending so Iowa attendees can coordinate efforts.
