Hello SDPCA & friends!

As summer comes drawing to a close, it is time to think of cooler days, of school coming back in session, and of advocating for more government funding for Peace Corps in the 2017 budget. This is something we all, as members of SDPCA, can do right here in our own city.

Over the past few years, we have been meeting with our local Representatives to make an in-person pitch for Peace Corps. We are still looking for folks to attend meetings at the offices of Duncan Hunter and Scott Peters. If you live in either of those districts, consider joining in. Click here to learn about our advocacy efforts this year. It is great to have as many voices as possible advocating for a program that is near and dear to all of our hearts.

Day at the Bay
Saturday, September 12 from 11am to 2pm
Tidelands Park, Coronado

Join us for our annual Day at the Bay! A light lunch will be provided. Bring a beach chair or blanket. Children are welcome. Kayaking will be available, too. Look for the new SDPCA Feather Flag! RSVP via Evite.

Tour of Survivors of Torture International & Happy Hour
Thursday, September 24 - 5:30 - 6:30pm - tour
Old Town - Address sent to those who RSVP

Join us to learn about the great work of Survivors of Torture International! Take a tour from 5:30 to 6:30pm and/or join us for happy hour at the nearby Coyote Cafe at 6:40ish. RSVP via E-vite.

Camping Trip!
October 3 -4, 2015
Agua Caliente County Park (near Ocotillo)

Come soak with us!! Join SDPCA members and friends at the Agua Caliente County Park hot springs camping trip!! (About 2 hours east of San Diego).

We will arrive on Saturday October 3 and depart October 4 - we have the group caravan spot reserved. Check in time is 2pm. and check-out is noon. Some cars are included in the site but the rest have a nominal parking fee. Please let us know if you can make it so we know how many s'mores to buy!

Ronald McDonald House - Prepare a meal
Saturday, October 17
10am to 2pm

Have a great time with fellow RPCVs while also preparing and serving a meal to the family members staying at Ronald McDonald house while their children are in Children's Hospital. RSVP via E-vite.

This is a two part event! Join in for one night or both!

It’s not too early to mark your calendars for our annual Holiday Party and Silent Auction (SDPCA’s primary fundraiser to support activities and projects of current volunteers). After marking your calendar….start thinking of donations for the Silent Auction. Last year’s event brought a wide variety of items donated by RPCVs - which made the auction extra special.

Share your Impact! Third Goal! In the last year, have you:

Shared your Peace Corps story with a classroom or other group?
Participated in a Peace Corps recruitment event?
Written an article or op-ed about your Peace Corps experience?
Done any other activity or event that shares your story with the public?

If your answer is yes, let Peace Corps know! Register your past events. Why? Every year Peace Corps reports to Congress and other stakeholders on the number of RPCVs who are involved in activities promoting intercultural understanding.

Niko Benjamin Thorwirth arrived on June 12, 2015 joining brother Luka and proud parents Sarah and Niels Thorwirth.

PAST EVENTS

4th of July Party
The SDPCA had a wonderful gathering of 15 people for a July 4th celebration. Gracious SDPCA member Hank hosted us at his house which had a great view from the backyard of a fireworks show put on by the San Diego Country Club. We grilled, shared pot luck food items, drank and were merry. We had a wide variety of RPCVs at the event from those who served in 1962 to possible future PCVs. Hopefully, this event will become a regular yearly celebration!

Health Justice
On Sunday, July 19, a small group of SDPCA members gathered to discuss health justice issues for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. Some of our fellow RPCVs return home from their country of service with an illness or injury and face challenges getting the care they need. The group discussed ways to address this issue and provide support to local RPCVs in this situation. Learn more at SDPCA.org/health-justice.

Bonfire - July 25
Over 25 people (from infants to veteran RPCV's) showed up to enjoy a perfect mid summer evening at the bay. Our prime spot on the bay afforded views of the spectacular downtown skyline as well as Ballast Point (legend has it Cabrillo and his men landed there). The roaring fire provided ambiance for laughter and cheerful banter. Tasty snacks were provided by the attendees. Let's do it again next year!

Go Padres!
On Friday August 7th, 16 members of the SDPCA, family & friends arrived by car, trolley, bicycle and on foot to enjoy a fun evening of America's favorite pastime - baseball! Although the Padres lost to the Phillies 4-3 in the 12th inning, we still enjoyed good friendship, food, beer, and of course the wave! Maybe next year, we will bring home a win.
