March 2017
Hello <<First Name>>,

The 25th anniversary of the Centre is coming up this year and the March edition includes a brief history of the Centre by one of its founding members. This month we are also introducing you to some new services now available at MNC. These include the Homeless Health Outreach Service and the No Interest Loans scheme (NILS) among others. And we also welcome back Billy's Ayurvedic Kitchen and Grandma's Kitchen as well.
MNC was delighted to receive $2500 recently from Maleny Chamber of Commerce, with funds coming from the Maleny Christmas Street Festival proceeds. A big thank you to the Chamber for their generosity.

Homeless Health Outreach

Homeless Health Outreach (funded by Queensland Health and located on the Sunshine Coast) will run a limited service from MNC, to be provided on Thursdays on a monthly basis to coincide with our community lunch. The next service will be held on Thursday 16 March.
This is a multidisciplinary service consisting of doctors, nurses, social workers and psychologists who focus on coordination of care for individuals who are homeless, sleeping rough, in emergency accommodation etc. Clients can be referred by services as well as self referral.

Fix It Cafe gets underway!

Second and fourth Thursday of the month,
9am to 2.30pm

9 February was a great start for the Fix It year. Over 20 people brought items for assessment by the team. It was a busy day and earned $120 for the Neighbourhood Centre. Nev assembled a new bicycle and repaired another one.
Josie was flat out with the sewing tasks and had to ask a few people to come back next time. Theo sorted out the pull cord for a mower. Paul fixed a drill.
Unfortunately some of the other items were past being repaired or beyond our capability.
9 March will be the next one – see you then…
MNC is offering local businesses the opportunity to advertise in our monthly newsletter which goes out to about 1700 people per month. You can contact Anne or Nooreen in our office to discuss further.

Supporting refugees with Welcome to Maleny
We are a refugee support group based out of (you guessed it!) Maleny. We are an enthusiastic group of individuals dedicated to fostering relationships with refugees in the Brisbane area and advocating for asylum seeker rights in the broader Australian region.
We have an upcoming fundraising drive at the Community Centre Kiosk in Maple Street on Saturday 4 March. Come and speak with us. Our next meeting is on Monday 6 March at 4:30pm at MNC.  Everyone is welcome in our group and we encourage participation in our meetings.

MNC has trained a volunteer to process applications for NILS. Available every Tuesday morning.  More info
One of the Centre's main functions is to support community members who find themselves in a crisis situation. Each month we would like to share some of their stories:

"MNC is a wonderful resource"

I am a middle aged woman living in rental accomodation with my son and his girlfriend. I am in the Newstart program and money is very tight. But the Centre has been great and supplied me with groceries and a reference to St. Vinnies for a clothing voucher. I have also signed up for budgeting counselling through the Centre. I feel the Maleny Neighborhood Centre is a wonderful resource and I would recommend it to anyone in need."

Get connected with your community!

Caloundra & Hinterland Family Support Programme

Sometimes families struggle with problems like financial pressures, difficulties coping with children, feeling isolated, lonely & stressed. Often parents just need someone to talk to.
Family Support is an early intervention programme that aims to improved children's development and wellbeing by supporting the capacity of those in a parenting role.

Specifically working with children up to the age of 12 years, Family Support seeks to:
• strengthen family relationships
• support families
• improve children's wellbeing
• increase participation in community life to strengthen family and community functioning.

If you think that you or your family, may benefit from this type of support, give Wendy a call on Mob: 0423 716 705 or Holly on 0488 000 343.
Wendy is at the MNC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 7.30am – 12 noon
