What's happening this "Urban" October 2020?

Urban October 2021 offers us a moment to raise our voices in the defence, promotion and realization of our human rights related to habitat. This month is not only about urban sustainability, even though the theme of this year’s World Habitat Day (4th October) is “Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world”. Social and environmental movements, activists, grassroots organisations, NGOs and local governments across the world are raising their voices in a joint call for climate justice, articulating equality, human rights, collective rights, and historical responsibilities for climate change as an urgent political and ethical issue. This includes many activities, campaigns and events hosted by HIC Members, Friends and Allies that you can join, support and amplify.
During this month and the beginning of November, when the next climate summit – COP 26 – will take place, HIC and its Members are calling for climate justice to be treated and enacted as a fundamental habitat-related human right.
Non-action is no longer an option because climate justice is a human right which encompasses the rights of all species – human and non-human – to live on this planet. We are looking forward this entire month, to call for real changes, to jointly challenge the systemic roots of injustice, and to learn from each other how climate justice can be localised with concrete local and global impacts. Let’s move forward into alternative ways of being and organising socially, economically, environmentally, and politically.

All what you need to know about the new HIC Co-learning spaces
 HIC co-learning spaces are cross-regional, multi-session encounters open to all HIC Members, Friends and allies to generate and multiply emancipatory learning practices applied on the defense of human rights related to habitat. Each co-learning space will be hosted over an extended time period, mostly online, facilitated by HIC Members with the support of HIC and the Knowledge in Action for Urban Equality (KNOW) programme.

Urban October statement of the Women and Habitat African Working Group
 Researches have shown so far is that laws and policies are not the main problems for women’s access or inheritance of land and housing. Rather the problem is with the adherence to the laws and policies within families and kindred, due to deeply entrenched traditions and cultural practices.
