Wise words from industry professionals

This month we spoke to two new CSD members, we wanted to hear what they thought about the design industry, what got them into it and requested some words of wisdom for those just starting out. James and Emma describe their career and outline what they look for in design graduates and student placements, as well as some advice based on their experience.

James Farnell MCSD

James started his design journey in 1988 at Harrogate College of Art and Design where he completed an Art and Design Diploma; he then went on to study Furniture and Product Design at Kingston University. Since then James has lived and worked all over the world and has over 20 years’ experience in the design industry, many successful projects under his belt and is the Creative Director at Little, a brand experience and architectural consultation studio based in Orange County, California.

Professional views from the 20th Century on Designs within Hospitality

The role of the interior designer within the hospitality industry (hotels, restaurants and bars in particular) is to provide a commercial exercise of capital investment to achieve a financial return - not an exercise of art or purist design.

The adjudicator of successful design in this industry is not the designer, or the client, but the customer. It is their repeat purchasing of the product which ultimately provides the return on the investment.

The designer must ensure that there is a happy balance between image and/or style, operational efficiency and customer comfort - all of which must be achieved at a defined capital cost.
