George Scott Robertson Memorial Lecture 2023

The annual George Scott Robertson Memorial Lecture was held recently in Queen’s University Belfast. The memorial lecture is jointly hosted by AFBI, the Institute for Global Food Security (IGFS) at Queen’s University Belfast; the Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA). The event commemorates the achievements of Dr George Scott Robertson who played a key role in promoting agricultural progress in Northern Ireland in the first half of the 20th century. This year’s lecture welcomed Professor Julie Fitzpatrick OBE, FIBiol, FRAgS, MRCVS, FRSE, Director of Moredun Institute and Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland as the Keynote speaker who spoke about 'Livestock science matters for One Health'.

RV Corystes welcomes the public on board
The AFBI Research Vessel Corystes again lowered its gangplank as part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival (NISF) to welcome aboard members of the public for a tour of the ship.  During the sold out tours those lucky enough to get on board met the crew and scientists and found out what they do when they go to sea!
Soil Nutrient Health Scheme (SNHS) reaches important milestone
Soil sampling in Zone one of the Soil Nutrient Health Scheme has continued at pace with the completion of Mr John Mercer’s farm in Dromara, Co Down in mid-February, closely coinciding with the scheme reaching the milestone of 100,000 fields sampled.

AFBI to enter into new agreement with long-term grass-breeding partner Barenbrug
The AFBI forage grass breeding programme based at Loughgall, and supported by funding from DAERA will enter into a new commercial agreement in 2023 with long-term commercial partner Barenbrug.

International Day for Women and Girls in Science
Paula Lagan and Cathy Brooke from AFBI Veterinary Sciences Division at Stormont attended a lunch on 2 February at the British Embassy in Dublin to celebrate the International Day for Women and Girls in Science. The event brought together over 70 creative and scientific minds from organisations across the country.
AFBI become Corporate Member of Women in Business
AFBI have become a Corporate Member of the leading network for women in the workplace across NI Women in Business. Women in Business have over 8000 members from a diverse network of women.
AVSPNI Open Day at AFBI Veterinary Laboratories Omagh
AFBI were delighted to welcome the Association of Veterinary Surgeons Practicing in Northern Ireland (AVSPNI) to the AFBI Omagh Veterinary Laboratory for their annual “Omagh Day” meeting which took place on 10 January after a COVID enforced break of 3 years since 2020.

A walk on the wild side - Sand, Sea and Smart Tech
Visitors to the Murlough NNR will be able to experience the work carried out by the Marine Protected Area Management and Monitoring project (MarPAMM) via videos accessible from smart devices via the QR codes and information boards posted along a special walking route on the site managed by the National Trust.

AFBI Scientist earns Higher Education Academy Fellowship
Following completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education at QUB, Professor Nicolae Corcionivoschi from AFBI’s Bacteriology Branch has now achieved the status of Fellow with the Higher Education Academy.This membership will ensure and increase the quality and delivery of postgraduate teaching at AFBI.

Following the AFBI Charity Fundraising event before Christmas, we are delighted to tell you that we have raised £1046 in aid of the Friends of the Cancer Centre. In the last year the charity has invested over £1.13 million into local cancer services through the life-saving and life-changing work we support.
