Dr Ian Massey in conversation with Linder
Friday, 26th September 6.00pm.
Gallery open for refreshments from 5.30pm onwards.
Linder will talk to Dr Ian Massey, art historian and artist, about his current research on St Ives artists, including the sculptor John Milne (1931-1978). Originally from Eccles near Salford, Milne came to live in St Ives in the Fifties, becoming an assistant to Barbara Hepworth, with whom he developed a close relationship. Milne went on to forge an international career, one that was sadly terminated with his premature death at the age of forty-seven. In the Sixties, Milne’s house “Trewyn” became a focal point for visitors, including both the artist’s predominantly gay bohemian circle and British and American artists.
Dr Massey first visited St Ives in 1976, and has been a regular visitor ever since. He has written widely on British art, and is author of the monograph biography Patrick Procktor: Art and Life (2010) and co-author of Keith Vaughan: The Mature Oils (2012). He has in recent years curated a number of exhibitions, including a critically acclaimed show of Patrick Procktor’s work at Huddersfield Art Gallery in 2012.
