CLEANTECH SAN DIEGO CELEBRATES 15 YEARS

On September 14, Cleantech San Diego hosted a reception to celebrate the organization's 15th anniversary. The event, hosted at Latham & Watkins, recognized Cleantech San Diego members and founders who have helped make the San Diego region a globally-recognized cleantech leader. Cleantech San Diego was founded in 2007 by visionary leaders from the private, public, and academic sectors who recognized a growing cleantech industry as the next great economic opportunity for the San Diego region. Today, Cleantech San Diego's members include more than 120 businesses, universities, governments, and nonprofits committed to advancing sustainable solutions for the benefit of the economy, the environment, and all members of the community. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria attended the event and delivered congratulatory remarks commending Cleantech San Diego as an impressive and productive advocate for San Diego's cleantech sector - a thriving industry that employs close to 40,000 people in our region and has a $9 billion impact on our regional economy.

November 9: Southern California Energy Innovation Network Annual Showcase

On November 9, Cleantech San Diego's Southern California Energy Innovation Network (SCEIN) will host its annual showcase featuring short presentations from SCEIN startups currently seeking Seed through Series A financing rounds. The presenting companies have cleantech solutions spanning smart grid services, energy services, energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, energy storage, and clean transportation. The SCEIN Showcase is designed to raise the visibility of these highly successful companies with investors, strategic partners, potential customers, and the broader cleantech community. SCEIN Startups Showcased at California Energy Commission Annual Symposium

On October 4, the California Energy Commission hosted its 8th Annual EPIC Symposium exploring the latest technology and policy innovations that can enable California to meet its energy and climate goals. With ALD Technical Solutions, Community Energy Labs, and Smartville featured in two of the breakout sessions; Icarus RT, Universal Devices, and Harvest Thermal being three of the nine companies featured in the online exhibit hall; and Controlled Thermal Resources participating in the breakout session on “Securing California’s Battery Supply Chain” that Cleantech San Diego's Jason Anderson moderated, Cleantech San Diego and the Southern California Energy Innovation Network were the biggest regional contributors to this year’s EPIC Symposium.

Cleantech San Diego Hosts Member Webinar on Inflation Reduction Act and Federal Policies

On September 28, Cleantech San Diego hosted a member webinar featuring a conversation with legislative analysts from Mintz and ML Strategies about federal policy updates affecting the cleantech sector. The Inflation Reduction Act and upcoming elections were key topics of discussion. 

Cleantech San Diego Well Represented at RE+

On September 20, Cleantech San Diego's Jason Anderson and Zac Dobbin attended the RE+ Conference in Anaheim, CA. The international solar and storage event included Cleantech San Diego member exhibitors Black & Veatch, Baker Electric, BayWa r.e.EDF Renewables, GKN Hydrogen, PXiSE Energy Solutions, Smartville, Stoel Rives, and XENDEE.

HelioVolta's SolarGrade Wins $200,000 
American-Made Solar Prize from DOE

On September 20, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the winners of the American-Made Solar Prize Round 5 competition to advance solar technologies. Among them was Cleantech San Diego member and Southern California Energy Innovation Network company HelioVolta, which was awarded $200,000 for their SolarGrade software platform that improves inspection, operations, and maintenance of PV systems leveraging field technician inputs and data analytics. Read More

Baker Electric Home Energy Launches PowerOn Battery Rewards Program

Cleantech San Diego member Baker Electric Home Energy has announced the launch of its PowerOn Battery Rewards Program in partnership with sonnen, a global market leader in smart energy storage and virtual power plant technology. PowerOn rewards participating Baker Electric Home Energy residential customers in Southern California for supporting the state’s power grid. Baker is the first in California to provide this advanced consumer battery program, using the sonnenConnect platform, offering a sustainable alternative to net energy metering. Read More

San Diego Community Power RFP for Long-Term CA RPS-Eligible Renewable Energy

San Diego Community Power (SDCP) released an RFP for Long-Term California RPS-Eligible Renewable Energy. Through this RFP, SDCP is requesting proposals for long-term, Portfolio Content Category 1 renewable energy products with initial deliveries commencing prior to December 31, 2026. SDCP’s RFP materials are posted online and respondents are encouraged to regularly check the website for updates to the bid requirements and/or offer form. Respondents are responsible for submitting all offers using the most current offer form. Learn More

Paired Power's New Solar Canopy Enables Quick EV-Charging-Station Installation

Cleantech San Diego member and Southern California Energy Innovation Network company Paired Power, a provider of solar-powered electric vehicle charging products, has launched its transportable solar canopy, PairTree, with built-in EV charging capabilities. The new offering gives customers quick access to the renewable energy of the sun without the costly construction and infrastructure requirements of traditional solar canopy installations. With its modular, fast-install design, PairTree can be used with or without a grid connection. Read More

ENGIE and SDG&E Help Open Transportation Center for All-Electric School District Fleet

Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) unveiled its new $24 million Transportation Services Center – a state-of-the-art facility that integrates the infrastructure necessary to support the district’s transition to an all-electric bus fleet. GUHSD collaborated with ENGIE North America to complete an in-depth analysis of fleet and transportation requirements and developed a 28-year Power Purchase Agreement that includes solar, electric vehicle charging stations, and smart control software. SDG&E was also an essential project partner through its Power Your Drive for Fleets program. Nuvve and V2G Featured as California Governor Signs Climate Action Legislation

During Governor Gavin Newsom's September 16 press conference where he signed climate protection legislation for the State of California, Cleantech San Diego member Nuvve's vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology was showcased for media and elected officials. Newsom recognized the role V2G is playing in the state's efforts to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the electric grid. Read More

Navy and Port Partner to Generate Millions for Electrification Projects around San Diego Bay

To further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality and public health on and around San Diego Bay, Navy Region Southwest and the Port of San Diego have formed a first-of-its-kind partnership that gives the Navy access to participate in California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard market. Read More

Congress Reauthorizes Small Business Innovation Research Program

The Small Business Administration’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) awards were both recently extended by congress. The programs, known as "America's Seed Fund," are meant to incentivize small businesses to engage in early-stage research and development for technologies and products that companies might otherwise shy away from given uncertain returns on investments. Read More

October 19: Smartville Second-Life Battery Energy Storage System Commissioning

On October 19, Cleantech San Diego member and Southern California Energy Innovation Network company Smartville in collaboration with UC San Diego will commission and demonstrate its first commercial energy storage system using repurposed battery packs. The research and demonstration project is supported by the California Energy Commission and the Department of Energy ARPA-E Program. RSVP
