Dear Friends:
Our fifth year began with Convocation, a culmination of the Summer Bridge program and the official start of the academic year. Guest speaker Errol Louis, noted journalist and host of NY1’s City Hall, gave a compelling speech and encouraged students to “…dream, and dream big.”  In addition to our continuing students, we welcomed 432 incoming students to begin classes this fall. We look forward to supporting their dreams and celebrating their achievements this year.
Earlier this summer, we were delighted to be ranked the No. 1 community college in New York State by EDsmart, a nationally recognized publisher of college resources and rankings. The ranking is based on four publicly available data points: accreditation, affordability, academic quality, and student satisfaction. Guttman is the only CUNY college in the top 10. This is a tremendous honor for a young college. We are equally proud of maintaining our high graduation rates: 28% (115) of students who entered in 2014 graduated in two years; and 44% (121) of students from the 2013 entering cohort completed their associate degrees in three years. These rates are consistently above the national average and are a happy reminder that our model and focus on student success are working.
During the summer, Guttman students participated in rich cultural experiences in Germany, Jamaica, and Ecuador as part of the Global Guttman program. Two IT students built a quadcopter (drone) that traveled with students to the Ecuador rainforest to capture aerial imagery of the Itapoa Reserve. Providing students with valuable experiential opportunities remains a hallmark of our model.
We look forward to another successful year.
Best Wishes,
Scott E. Evenbeck
