Hill Family Farm Newsletter - Fall 2015

I don't know about you, but we are excited to see fall just around the corner. As you can imagine, summer is crazy busy on the farm. Cultivating, planting, weeding, picking, packing baskets, rinse and repeat over and over. Whew! Getting tired again just remembering!

Fall, on the other hand, signals a time when things begin to slow down a touch and we get a little time to catch our breath. Of course this doesn't mean there's nothing happening on the farm. Oh no, far from it. Just means we're not as crazy busy as during the summer! :-) 

Fall also means I now have time to update everyone on all the happenings around the farm. There are new additions to both our animal collection and product offerings. Can't wait to tell you about 'em, so here goes!

Goodlettsville Farmer's Market
We are trying a new market this fall. Beginning Thursday, Oct 1, we will be selling at the Goodlettsville Farmer's Market. The market is located in the grassy area next to the Goodlettsville Church of Christ on Main Street, between Long Hollow Pike and Rivergate Pkwy. The market hours are 3:30pm - 6:30pm and will run through Thursday, Oct 29. Hope to see you there!
Introducing Winnie and Snake, the newest additions to our pig family! Winnie (left) is a half Yorkshire/half Berkshire gilt and has been bred to a registered Berkshire. She should have her little piglets the first week of November. Snake (little guy on the right) is a registered Berkshire boar and will hopefully be "papa hog" on the farm for the next several years. Check 'em out next time you're at the farm!
Winter Egg/Chicken CSA
This winter we will once again be offering CSA options for both farm fresh eggs and pasture-raised chicken. Our winter CSA runs November-April and will provide members with fresh eggs on a weekly basis and pasture-raised chicken once a month.

Here are the details...
As many of you probably already know, demand for our farm fresh eggs far exceeds supply (a good problem we are very thankful for). Our current flock of egg layers number around 135 and range in age from 1-2 years old. While this may seem like a lot of hens, the fact is as hens age and molt, they lay fewer eggs per week.

To counter this we are adding a second flock of egg layers. The pullets pictured above were hatched July 8 and will hopefully begin laying in late December. Our plan is for this flock to live in the back pasture and follow the pigs around. Should be a definite win/win for our sustainability efforts!
Pasture-raised Beef!
We are excited to be working on a partnership with Woodsy Creek Farm here in White House. The partnership will allow us to sell all natural, pasture-raised beef! When combined with our pasture-raised chicken and pork, this partnership will help us be your one-stop shop for fresh, all-natural meat.

Currently we have 1lb packages of ground beef for sale and they can be picked up here at the farm, or at the Goodlettsville market each Thursday afternoon in October. Our plan is to slowly expand our offerings to include individual cuts, as well as offering 1/4, 1/2 and whole cow options.

Pumpkin Patch?
If any of you are involved with a pumpkin patch and expect to have leftover pumpkins, please let us know. We would be happy to come and haul them off for you. Our pigs love 'em and believe it or not, pumpkin seeds are a great, all-natural dewormer. Bet you didn't know that, did you?
